Do You Have an Idea Worth Spreading?
Speaking at TEDx is an opportunity to give the TALK of your life. We know there is a great deal of undiscovered talent out there, and we’re reaching out to give those people with ideas worth spreading the chance to be a part of TEDxPasadenaWomen.
Things to Know Before Applying
Something that’s new and surprising; an idea or invention that your audience has never heard about.
A compelling new rendering of a great idea that your audience may already have heard—something that challenges beliefs and perspectives.
There’s no single formula for a great talk, but there is a secret ingredient that all the best ones have in common. You might find this video produced by Chris Anderson, the TED Curator, informative as you put together your application.
This short-talk model works since it demands the audience’s attention for only a short time, decreasing the chance of minds wandering or daydreaming about lunch. In fact, some of the greatest TED Talks have been as short as five minutes long!
We are looking for ideas on any themes or topics in which the speaker is interested that relate to women and men who care deeply about equity and access for women across all barriers. Further, the conference theme of Rise should be interwoven throughout the overarching presentation. While TEDxPasadenaWomen is a TEDWomen event, we seek speakers with deep, profound ideas, regardless of gender. Our goal is to identify bright minds to give idea-focused talks on a wide range of subjects that will foster learning, inspiration and wonder—talks that will provoke conversations that matter.
TED has very specific standards when it comes to offering new ideas:
- An idea isn’t just a story or a list of facts. A good idea takes certain evidence or observations and draws a larger conclusion.
- TEDx speakers are not allowed to self-promote (no selling your book, wearing your company t-shirt or mentioning how to contact you offstage).
- Speakers may not mention politics or religion (including any New Age beliefs).
- Any science that is mentioned in a talk must be sound, empirically researched and replicable.
No, the speakers may not be paid or given an honorarium. We also cannot compensate for travel expenses.
Each talk will be filmed, and an edited version will be hosted on the TEDx YouTube channel.
Applications will be accepted beginning Saturday, April 15, 2017. Visit the Speaker Application page to apply or click the button below.
We have extended our May 15th deadline to accept applications on a rolling basis for future speaking opportunities, while giving priority for consideration for our 2017 conference to those who made the May 15th deadline.
Speakers who apply by the May 15 application deadline will be notified via email on or before Saturday, July 1, 2017.
The TEDxPasadenaWomen Board of Directors is in place to support the speakers first and foremost. The event can’t happen without you! We will not set you up for failure, so you can trust us to make all of the rules and guidelines very clear and understandable. We will also provide you with a speaking coach, someone who is familiar with the TED Talk format and who knows the tricks of the trade for finding success as a public speaker. Plus, all of the speakers will have three solid months of closely mentored and hand-held preparation. You can trust us to make sure you shine!
